8 Drugs that we take often and that they are destroying our brain

Without a doubt, the human brain is the body’s most complex and unknown of the human body. It is in charge of controlling everything that we do, think and feel. But it has not always been as large and much less complex as they are today.

Thanks to the increase of size that has experienced with the passing of the years, we have been able to become one of the few mammals on the planet capable of remembering events of our past, think in the future, and to discover and learn constantly from the world around us.

It is for this reason that the loss of memory we find it so frightening. Our memories and ability to learn are what separates us from the other species. Without this ability, directly we can not function as “people”.

The dementia can affect individuals curious and smart and turns them into beings as dependent as any baby. It is of vital importance that we protect our memory and our brain.

Unfortunately, many times we damage our mind almost without realising it. And is that, in an effort to treat other conditions, science has created drugs that we stripped slowly of our memories. Discover what are these drugs and how they affect our brain in order to try to avoid them as much as possible.

These are the 8 most common drugs linked to memory loss:

1 – Antibiotics

Thanks to the advancement of science, we can learn day by day something more about the relationship that exists between the brain and the microbiome of our gut. What is certain is that many of the hormones and chemicals that affect our brain are primarily found in our digestive tract.

Unfortunately, many of the antibiotics that we consume, we end up with all the bacteria (good and bad) of our intestinal tract, a fact that has a direct impact on our brain function.

Serotonin, for example, is an extremely important neurotransmitter for the brain which is linked to depression, migraines and other neurological diseases. A new research shows that many common antibiotics, especially quinolones, are capable of causing extreme confusion, delirium, mental impairment of the cognitive function and psychiatric disorders.

Among the antibiotics that can negatively affect our brain are Amoxicillin, Cephalexin and Levofloxacin.

2 – Antihistamines

Antihistamines and anticholinergics are often found in the group of prescribed medicines mainly used to treat allergies, colds, dizziness, and even sleep problems.

These alter the brain function by inhibiting the acetylcholine, the main neurotransmitter for learning and memory. By now it is known that the decrease of acetylcholine causes dementia, memory loss, hallucinations, blurred vision, confusion, and delirium.

Among this type of drugs include Diphenhydramine, Hydroxyzine, Clemastine, Desloratadine, and Oxytrol.

3 – Sleeping pills

Medications for sleep causes loss of memory due to that during their action reduce the brain activity of important parts of the brain responsible for learning and memory. The medications most influential in this sense are the benzodiazepines.

Among these drugs we can find the Alprazolam, Diazepam, Lorazepam, Chlordiazepoxide hydrochloride, Eszopiclone, Zaleplon, and Zolpidem.

4 – Statins

Statins are mainly used to reduce cholesterol. The problem is that it also reduces the levels of cholesterol in the brain, which in turn affects their ability to function properly. The memory loss caused by statins is not anything new, so this should be another reason to take the initiative and reduce the cholesterol the natural way.

Examples of statins are harmful to the brain, we can find the Atorvastatin, Fluvastatin, Lovastatin, Pravastatin, Rosuvastatin and Simvastatin.

5 – Neuroleptic

Neuroleptics suppress dopamine receptors in the brain responsible for transmitting signals at the same.

These drugs are intended to help those who suffer from paranoia, schizophrenia or bipolar disorder also can cause the brain to shrink, affecting the brain function in general and especially in learning and memory. In the most extreme cases can even lead to dementia, the Alzheimer’s disease premature and other disorders related to the brain.

Neuroleptic drugs are most harmful in this regard would be Haloperidol and Thioridazine.

6 – Antihypertensive

Used to treat hypertension, these beta-blockers interfere with the messages sent by the brain using epinephrine and norepinephrine, which affect the loss of memory, especially verbal memory.

The drugs most harmful are Atenolol, Carvedilol, Metoprolol, Propranolol, Sotalol and Timolol.

7 – Antidepressants and Anxiolytics

Antidepressants such as Amitriptyline, Clomipramine, Desipramine, and Nortriptyline block the action of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, a fact that impairs the memory.

For their part, anti-anxiety drugs like Alprazolam, Chlordiazepoxide, Clonazepam, Diazepam and Temazepam lessen the brain activity associated with memory both short and long term.

8 – opioid Analgesics and antiepilécticos

Both medications decrease the flow of brain signals to the central nervous system and the emotional reaction to pain. This “slowness” of the brain inhibits its function, to have a negative impact directly on learning and memory.

The drugs most harmful would be the Fentanyl, Hydrocodone, Morphine, Oxycodone, Acetazolamide, Carbamazepine, Ezogabine and Gabapentin.

The drugs just mentioned are just a few of all those who in one way or another negatively affect our memory. It is important that you are aware of what you drink and what are the possible side effects.

If you are currently taking any of the medicines listed above, in no way stop taking it on your own. Please speak first with your doctor about your concerns for him to try to find an alternative solution.
