Google is fighting a previous megaboete around abuse of power with the Android platform, by to appeal. Previously demanded the European Commission a record of 4,34 billion euro, but Google does not easily give up.
The vast majority of smartphones run on Android, which features Google’s own apps. So is the default search engine of Google and it is the default browser and of course Chrome. Because phone manufacturers don’t have a choice as to if they Android want to implement, it creates unfair competition. Users are less likely other search engines and browsers to try.
At the same time, there is a case of Google Shopping, where there is abuse of power. Google shows first products from stores that pay for a spot at the top of the search results, then come to independent sites offer. This miljardenboete is now also challenged. In both cases, it may still take years before there is clarity.
